# Nate Query

**Nate Query** (born September 5, 1973) is an American [musician](/source/Musician) best known as the [bassist](/source/Bassist) of the [Portland, Oregon](/source/Portland,_Oregon) indie rock band [The Decemberists](/source/The_Decemberists).[1][2] He plays electric bass, upright bass, banjo and cello.[3] He makes appearances on many albums by Portland artists, including [Laura Gibson](/source/Laura_Gibson), [Rebecca Gates](/source/Rebecca_Gates), the [Minus 5](/source/Minus_5), and [Laura Veirs](/source/Laura_Veirs).[4][5][6] He is also credited on [Michael Zapruder](/source/Michael_Zapruder)'s record. His former bands include Calobo and Everyday Dirt. His most recent project is the acoustic band [Black Prairie](/source/Black_Prairie) with a number of other Portland artists.[7]

## Personal life

Query was born in Bellevue Washington.[1] He attended Portland's West Sylvan Middle School and [Lincoln High School (Portland, Oregon)](/source/Lincoln_High_School_(Portland,_Oregon)). He is married and has two children. His favorite book is the [Tao Te Ching](/source/Tao_Te_Ching) as translated by Stephen Mitchell, saying "I've read it 20 times and every time I learn something. Reminds me not to take things too seriously."[8] He is an avid home brewer.[9]
