**Natalya Aleksandrovna Timakova** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Наталья Александровна Тимакова; born 12 April 1975[1]) is a Russian [journalist](/source/Journalist). From 2008 to 2018, she was the [press secretary](/source/Press_secretary) of Russian politician [Dmitry Medvedev](/source/Dmitry_Medvedev).

She has the federal state civilian service rank of [1st class Active State Councillor of the Russian Federation](/source/1st_class_Active_State_Councillor_of_the_Russian_Federation).[2]

## Early life and education

Timakova was born in Alma Ata in the [Kazakh SSR](/source/Kazakh_SSR) (now [Almaty](/source/Almaty), [Kazakhstan](/source/Kazakhstan)) on 12 April 1975. She graduated from the [Faculty of Philosophy](/source/Faculty_of_Arts) at [Moscow State University](/source/Moscow_State_University) in 1998.[3]

## Journalistic career

Timakova began working as a journalist in 1995 whilst studying at Moscow State, where she was a [political journalist](/source/Political_journalism) for *[Moskovsky Komsomolets](/source/Moskovsky_Komsomolets)*. In 1996, Timakova was part of the Presidential [pool of journalists](/source/Press_pool) and she covered the [election campaign](/source/Election_campaign) of [first Russian president](/source/List_of_Russian_Presidents) [Boris Yeltsin](/source/Boris_Yeltsin) for the [1996 presidential election](/source/1996_Russian_presidential_election). In 1997, Timakova was a reporter and then senior political correspondent at *[Kommersant](/source/Kommersant)*, and worked for the [publishing house](/source/Publishing_house) until 1999.[3] In 1999, Timakova was the political correspondent for [Interfax](/source/Interfax).[3]

## Government service

In 1999, Timakova was appointed as deputy head of the Government Information Department of the [Russian government](/source/Russian_government), until she was appointed in 2000 as the deputy head of the [Presidential Press and Information Office](/source/Presidential_Press_and_Information_Office), and from 2001 as first deputy head of the same office. On 4 November 2002, she was appointed by [Russian president](/source/Russian_president) [Vladimir Putin](/source/Vladimir_Putin) as first deputy press secretary for the president and head of the [Presidential Press and Information Office](/source/Kremlin_Press_Secretary).[4]

On 13 May 2008, Timakova was appointed by new president [Dmitry Medvedev](/source/Dmitry_Medvedev) to the post of [press secretary](/source/Press_secretary) to the Russian president.[5] Timakova was a core member of Medvedev's presidential administration,[6] and she was deemed by the [Agency for Political and Economic Communications](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Agency_for_Political_and_Economic_Communications&action=edit&redlink=1) in 2011 to be the 44th most powerful figure, and to be the third most powerful female, in [Russian politics](/source/Politics_of_Russia), after [Tatyana Golikova](/source/Tatyana_Golikova) and [Elvira Nabiullina](/source/Elvira_Nabiullina).[7]

On 22 May 2012, she was appointed as the Spokesman of the Prime Minister.[8]

After leaving government service, she was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the [VEB.RF](/source/VEB.RF) state development corporation.[9] In November 2021, Timakova was on the Expert Council of the [Agency for Strategic Initiatives](/source/Agency_for_Strategic_Initiatives_(Russia)).[10]

## Personal life

She is married to businessman Alexander Budberg, who is the chairman of the executive committee of the [Bolshoi Ballet](/source/Bolshoi_Ballet)'s board of trustees.[11]

## Awards

On 29 January 2009, [South Ossetian president](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=South_Ossetian_president&action=edit&redlink=1) [Eduard Kokoity](/source/Eduard_Kokoity) signed an ukaz conferring on Timakova the [Order of Friendship](/source/Order_of_Friendship) for "assistance in objective reporting of the [events around South Ossetia in 2008](/source/2008_South_Ossetia_war)".[12]
