'''Nareish Kumar''' is a [Fiji Indian](/source/Indians_in_Fiji) politician who won the [Labasa Open Constituency](/source/Labasa_(Open_Constituency%2C_Fiji)), one of the 25 open seats, for the [Fiji Labour Party](/source/Fiji_Labour_Party) during the [1999 elections](/source/1999_Fijian_general_election) for the [House of Representatives](/source/House_of_Representatives_of_Fiji).

On 19 May 2000, he was among the 43 members of the [People's Coalition Government](/source/People's_Coalition_(Fiji)), led by [Mahendra Chaudhry](/source/Mahendra_Chaudhry), taken hostage by [George Speight](/source/George_Speight) and his band of rebel [Republic of Fiji Military Forces](/source/Republic_of_Fiji_Military_Forces) (RFMF) soldiers from the [Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit](/source/Counter_Revolutionary_Warfare_Unit).
