The **Napier Ranges** are located in the [Kimberley](/source/Kimberley_(Western_Australia)) region of [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia). The range is south of and runs parallel to the [Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges](/source/Wunaamin-Miliwundi_Ranges) (formerly King Leopold Ranges).[1][2]

The majority of the Kimberley is composed of [sandstone](/source/Sandstone) but the Napier Range is mostly made from heavily eroded [limestone](/source/Limestone), or [karst](/source/Karst), with the ridges composed of an ancient [Devonian](/source/Devonian) reef system.[3]

They feature the impressive [Windjana Gorge](/source/Windjana_Gorge) and [Tunnel Creek](/source/Tunnel_Creek) and Geikie Gorge that were formed over 350 million years ago as part of the same limestone reef.

The [Fitzroy River](/source/Fitzroy_River_(Western_Australia)) cuts through the range at [Geikie Gorge](/source/Geikie_Gorge), while the [Lennard River](/source/Lennard_River) is responsible for the formation of Windjana Gorge.[4] The [Barker River](/source/Barker_River) also carved Barker gorge through the range.[1]

The highest point in the Napier Range is Mount Behm that is 325 metres (1,066 ft) above sea level.

The ranges were made famous by [Jandamarra](/source/Jandamarra), who was the subject of a massive police hunt and caused the construction of the [Lillimilura](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lillimilura&action=edit&redlink=1) police outpost which is on the southern side of the ranges approximately four kilometres from Windjana.

Some small deposits of [copper](/source/Copper) and [lead](/source/Lead) have been discovered in the Range but no active mine sites exist within the area.[5]

A major expedition was carried out through the Range in 1988 by the [Royal Geographical Society](/source/Royal_Geographical_Society) and the [Linnaean Society](/source/Linnaean_Society) involving 30 scientists. The scientists were studying the [biology](/source/Biology) and [geomorphology](/source/Geomorphology) of the Range.[3]
