'''Nanuuseq''', also known as ''Nanûseq'' or ''Nanusek'' is an uninhabited island in the [Kujalleq](/source/Kujalleq) municipality in southern [Greenland](/source/Greenland).

==Geography==
Nanuuseq is a coastal island, although it is also considered a [peninsula](/source/peninsula) owing to it almost being attached to the mainland shore of [King Frederick VI Coast](/source/King_Frederick_VI_Coast).<ref name="sailing">''Prostar Sailing Directions 2005 Greenland and Iceland Enroute'', p. 99</ref> located off the southeastern coast of Greenland between the mouth of [Lindenow Fjord](/source/Lindenow_Fjord) on its southern side and the mouth of [Nanuuseq Fjord](/source/Nanuuseq_Fjord) —formerly known as Oyfjord— to the north. Its length is {{convert|2.6|km|mi|0|abbr=off}} and its maximum width {{convert|1000|m|ft|0|abbr=off}}.<ref>[GoogleEarth](/source/GoogleEarth)</ref>

Although Nanuuseq is relatively small, its highest point reaches {{convert|670|m|ft|0|abbr=off}} in height.<ref name="sailing"/> The island's coast is deeply indented and the [sound](/source/Sound_(geography)) separating it from the peninsula on the mainland to the west is very narrow. [Queen Louise Island](/source/Queen_Louise_Island) lies {{cvt|7.7|km}} to the south, on the other side of the mouth of Lindenow Fjord.<ref name="mapcarta">{{cite web|url=http://mapcarta.com/19189186|title=Nanûseq|work=Mapcarta|accessdate=11 April 2016}}</ref>

==History==
[Peder Olsen Walløe](/source/Peder_Olsen_Wall%C3%B8e) reached this island in the 18th century while navigating along the then unmapped southeastern coast.

Until recent times the [Southeast-Greenland Inuit](/source/Southeast-Greenland_Inuit) visited the area around Nanusek during hunting trips up and down the coast. [Fridtjof Nansen](/source/Fridtjof_Nansen) wrote about them towards the end of the 19th century: {{quote|''The [woman-boat](/source/woman-boat) in question had in this manner spent three years on the passage from [Umivik](/source/Umivik), and would no doubt take pretty nearly as long to return. The other woman-boat that was passing southwards from [Cape Bille](/source/Cape_Steen_Bille) got as far as Nanusek, about 65 miles from the trading-settlements west of [Cape Farewell](/source/Cape_Farewell), and there went into winter quarters;''<ref>Fridtjof Nansen, ''Eskimo Life'', p. 86</ref>}}
