The **Nanook River** (meaning "[polar bear](/source/Polar_bear)") is located on [Victoria Island](/source/Victoria_Island_(Canada)) in [Northern Canada](/source/Northern_Canada), commencing in the [Northwest Territories](/source/Northwest_Territories) and ending in [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut).

The Nanook River originates in the island's central plain,[1] south of the [Shaler Mountains](/source/Shaler_Mountains).[2] about two hours by [Twin Otter](/source/Twin_Otter) north of [Cambridge Bay](/source/Cambridge_Bay%2C_Nunavut).

The river flows east, passes through a rapid,[3] and then enters Namaycush Lake. From here, it proceeds northwards through several lakes, the last being the largest at 10 km (6.2 mi) long and 7 km (4.3 mi) wide.[4] The final 8 km (5.0 mi) include several uncharted rapids before the river's mouth reaches [Hadley Bay](/source/Hadley_Bay), emptying into [Viscount Melville Sound](/source/Viscount_Melville_Sound).[5]

No [glaciers](/source/Glacier) feed the river. [Lousewort](/source/Pedicularis), [Arctic poppy](/source/Papaver_radicatum), [aven](/source/Dryas_(plant)), [sedge](/source/Cyperaceae), willow thickets are found along the river. [Arctic fox](/source/Arctic_fox), [lemming](/source/Lemming), [muskox](/source/Muskox), [snowy owl](/source/Snowy_owl), [Peary caribou](/source/Peary_caribou) frequent the river, and polar bears are common at its mouth.
