This fish was first described in 1978 by Stanley H. Weitzman, along with two other new species (''[Nannostomus britskii](/source/Nannostomus_britskii)'' and ''[Nannostomus nitidus](/source/Nannostomus_nitidus)''), from a collection of specimens preserved in the [São Paulo](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo) museum.<ref name=Smithsonian/> Only rarely imported and kept by aquarists, they have been recorded from the Amazonian region of Brazil, specifically near [Santarém](/source/Santar%C3%A9m%2C_Par%C3%A1).<ref>{{FishBase |Nannostomus|limatus |month=February|year=2012}}</ref>
