**Fernando Dalla Chiesa** (born 3 November 1949) is an Italian academic and politician, honorary president of *[Libera](/source/Libera._Associazioni%2C_nomi_e_numeri_contro_le_mafie)*,[1] former [deputy](/source/Italian_Chamber_of_Deputies) and [senator](/source/Italian_Senate).

## Biography

Dalla Chiesa is the son of General [Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa](/source/Carlo_Alberto_Dalla_Chiesa), notable for campaigning against [terrorism](/source/Terrorism), and the brother of the TV presenter [Rita Dalla Chiesa](/source/Rita_Dalla_Chiesa) and the journalist and politician [Simona Dalla Chiesa](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Simona_Dalla_Chiesa&action=edit&redlink=1). His father was assassinated in 1982 together with his second wife, [Emanuela Setti Carraro](/source/Emanuela_Setti_Carraro).

Dalla Chiesa graduated in economics at the [Bocconi University](/source/Bocconi_University) in [Milan](/source/Milan) and became a [university professor](/source/University_professor)[*[ambiguous](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*] of sociology of organized crime, business management and communication and sociology of the organization at the [University of Milan](/source/University_of_Milan).[2] He is also honorary president of [Luigi Ciotti](/source/Luigi_Ciotti)'s *Libera* association.[3]

### Political career

In 1992, Dalla Chiesa joined [Leoluca Orlando](/source/Leoluca_Orlando)'s new-born [left-wing](/source/Left-wing) party [The Network](/source/The_Network_(political_party)), for which he was elected to the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Italian_Chamber_of_Deputies) at the [1992 general election](/source/1992_Italian_general_election).[4]

In the [1993 local elections](/source/1993_Italian_local_elections), Dalla Chiesa ran for the office of [mayor of Milan](/source/Mayor_of_Milan), supported by his party, by the [Democratic Party of the Left](/source/Democratic_Party_of_the_Left), the [Communist Refoundation Party](/source/Communist_Refoundation_Party) and the [Federation of the Greens](/source/Federation_of_the_Greens). He reached the runoff, but was defeated by the [Northern League](/source/Lega_Nord) candidate, [Marco Formentini](/source/Marco_Formentini_(politician)).[5]

Dalla Chiesa was not re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the [1994 general election](/source/1994_Italian_general_election) and decided to leave The Network.[6] He returned to the Chamber of Deputies in the [1996 general election](/source/1996_Italian_general_election), being elected as an independent in the [Federation of the Greens](/source/Federation_of_the_Greens) with the support of [The Olive Tree](/source/The_Olive_Tree_(Italy)) coalition.

When in 1998 the [first D'Alema cabinet](/source/First_D'Alema_government) was sworn in, Dalla Chiesa refrained from voting for trust because the government was also supported by [Francesco Cossiga](/source/Francesco_Cossiga) with whom dalla Chiesa had a bad relationship, since he accused the former [president of Italy](/source/President_of_Italy) of raising many malevolences against his father when he was [prefect](/source/Prefect) in [Palermo](/source/Palermo).[7]

In 2000, he became the coordinator in [Lombardy](/source/Lombardy) of [Arturo Parisi](/source/Arturo_Parisi)'s [The Democrats](/source/The_Democrats_(Italy)) and, in the [2001 general election](/source/2001_Italian_general_election), he was elected to the Senate.[8] In 2002, The Democrats and the [Italian People's Party](/source/Italian_People's_Party_(1994)) merged into [The Daisy](/source/The_Daisy).

Dalla Chiesa did not run for a parliamentary seat again in the [2006 general election](/source/2006_Italian_general_election), but after the win of [The Union](/source/The_Union_(Italy)) he was appointed undersecretary for universities and scientific research in the [second Prodi Cabinet](/source/Second_Prodi_government).[9] In 2007, Dalla Chiesa was a member of the national directorate of the [Democratic Party](/source/Democratic_Party_(Italy)).[10]

### Writing career

Dalla Chiesa has written several books and essays about politics and the fight against [organized crime in Italy](/source/Organized_crime_in_Italy). Among his most known works is the 1992 book *Il giudice ragazzino* (*The Boy Judge*), a tribute essay dedicated to [Rosario Livatino](/source/Rosario_Livatino), a young [Sicilian](/source/Sicily) judge who had been murdered by [the Mafia](/source/Sicilian_Mafia) in 1990. In telling the experience and the tragic end of Livatino, dalla Chiesa reconstructs his vision of the connection between the Mafia, politics and institutions in [Sicily](/source/Sicily) and [Italy](/source/Italy) in the late 1980s, indicating the murder of the judge as one of the highest triumphs of criminal powers.[11]

The 1994 film *[Law of Courage](/source/Law_of_Courage)* is based on Dalla Chiesa's book.
