# Nanda Mohammad

**Nanda Mohammad** (Arabic: ناندا محمد; born 25 September 1980) is a [Syrian](/source/Syrians) actress and [playwright](/source/Playwright). She is known for her work in both theatre and television in Europe and in the [Arab world](/source/Arab_world).

## Life and career

Mohammad was born and grew up in [Damascus](/source/Damascus). In 2001, she graduated from the [Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts](/source/Higher_Institute_of_Dramatic_Arts_(Damascus)) in Damascus. After marrying the Egyptian violinist Mohamed Sami, she left Syria and moved to [Cairo](/source/Cairo). Since 2012, she has often been working with Egyptian theatre director [Ahmed al-Attar](/source/Ahmed_al-Attar).[1]

In Syria, she has continued her work in contemporary theatre, for example in productions with [Naila al-Atrash](/source/Naila_Al_Atrash) and Omar Abou Saada, and has appeared on Syrian television. Since 2004, she has coached and trained other artists in voice and acting in the Middle East and in [Europe](/source/Europe).[1]

Internationally and in the Arab world, Mohammad has worked with theatre directors such as [Tim Supple](/source/Tim_Supple) (UK), [Ariane Mnouchkine](/source/Ariane_Mnouchkine) (France), Nullo Facchini (Denmark), Omar Abou Saada (Syria), [Pascal Rambert](/source/Pascal_Rambert) (France), Khaled Al-Tarefi (Palestine), Catherine Schaub Abkarian (France), [Laila Soliman](/source/Laila_Soliman) (Egypt), Henri Jules Julien (France) and Daniel San Pedro (France), among others. She participated in productions presented at theatre festivals such as the [Festival d'Avignon](/source/Festival_d'Avignon), the [London International Festival of Theatre](/source/London_International_Festival_of_Theatre) (LIFT), the [World Theatre Festival in Shizuoka](/source/World_Theatre_Festival_(Shizuoka)), Japan, the Zurich Theater Spektakel and the Theatre de [Vidy](/source/Vidy) in Switzerland, [Kunstenfestivaldearts](/source/Kunstenfestivaldesarts), Belgium, [Hong Kong Arts Festival](/source/Hong_Kong_Arts_Festival) and the [Singapore International Festival of Arts](/source/Singapore_International_Festival_of_Arts).[2]

As playwright, she has co-authored the plays *Hawa al-Hurriya (Whims of Freedom*)[3] and *Gathering Memories with My Eyelashes,* written during her residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2024, she was part of the jury for performance-related grants by the [Arab Fund for Arts and Culture](/source/Arab_Fund_for_Arts_and_Culture) (AFAC), Beirut.[1]

As Mohammad became known for her support of the [Syrian revolution](/source/Syrian_revolution), she was banned in her home country after her last visit in 2012.[4]
