# Nanda Mathew

**Caluadewagey Nanda Mathew** (2 February 1940 – 2020) was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the [Governor](/source/Provincial_Governors_of_Sri_Lanka) of [Uva Province](/source/Uva_Province), [Minister of Sports](/source/Ministry_of_Sports_(Sri_Lanka)) and a [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(Sri_Lanka)).[1][2][3]

## Early life and education

Born on 2 February 1940, to Sinhala Nationalist [Cyril Mathew](/source/Cyril_Mathew), he was educated at the [S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa](/source/S._Thomas'_College,_Gurutalawa) and [S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia](/source/S._Thomas'_College,_Mount_Lavinia). He became a land owner and a planter.[4]

## Political career

Mathew was elected to the [House of Representatives of Ceylon](/source/House_of_Representatives_of_Ceylon) in the [1965 general elections](/source/1965_Ceylonese_parliamentary_election) from [Kolonna](/source/Kolonna_Electoral_District) from the [United National Party](/source/United_National_Party).[5] He contested the [1970 general elections](/source/1970_Ceylonese_parliamentary_election) but was defeated by [P.O. Wimalanaga](/source/P.O._Wimalanaga).[6] He elected from [Kolonna](/source/Kolonna_Electoral_District) in the [1977 general elections](/source/1977_Sri_Lankan_parliamentary_election) and was appointed [Deputy Minister](/source/Deputy_minister_(Sri_Lanka)) of Naval Services and Tourism, Rural Industry Development and Mahaweli Development by President [J. R. Jayewardene](/source/J._R._Jayewardene).[7] He was elected in the [1989 general elections](/source/1989_Sri_Lankan_parliamentary_election) from [Ratnapura](/source/Ratnapura_Electoral_District) and was appointed [Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports](/source/Ministry_of_Sports_(Sri_Lanka)) by President [Ranasingha Premadasa](/source/Ranasingha_Premadasa). In 1994, he was given additional portfolios of Special Duties and Naval and Naval Development. He served as [Governor](/source/Provincial_Governors_of_Sri_Lanka) of [Uva Province](/source/Uva_Province) from 2003 to 2015 having been appointed by President [Chandrika Kumaratunga](/source/Chandrika_Kumaratunga) and President [Mahinda Rajapaksa](/source/Mahinda_Rajapaksa) from the [Sri Lanka Freedom Party](/source/Sri_Lanka_Freedom_Party).[4]

## Personal life and death

Mathew married Indira Kulathilake, daughter of [Semage Salman Kulatileke](/source/Semage_Salman_Kulatileke). They had one daughter, Nanditha Mathew.[4] Nanda Mathew died in 2020.[8]
