After graduating from [Brainerd High School](/source/Brainerd_High_School_(Minnesota)) in [Brainerd](/source/Brainerd%2C_Minnesota), [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota), Pedersen received her [B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in [psychology](/source/psychology) from the [University of Minnesota](/source/University_of_Minnesota) in 1974, where she graduated ''[magna cum laude](/source/magna_cum_laude)''.
