She represented the electoral district of [Matane](/source/Matane_(provincial_electoral_district)) in the [National Assembly of Quebec](/source/National_Assembly_of_Quebec) from 2003 to 2007 as a member of the [Quebec Liberal Party](/source/Quebec_Liberal_Party). She was defeated by [Pascal Bérubé](/source/Pascal_B%C3%A9rub%C3%A9) of the [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) in the [2007 provincial election](/source/2007_Quebec_general_election).
She ran as the [Liberal Party of Canada](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Canada)'s candidate for the district of [Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia](/source/Haute-Gasp%C3%A9sie%E2%80%94La_Mitis%E2%80%94Matane%E2%80%94Matap%C3%A9dia) in the [2008 federal election](/source/2008_Canadian_federal_election). She lost to [Bloc Québécois](/source/Bloc_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) incumbent [Jean-Yves Roy](/source/Jean-Yves_Roy), but received the highest vote percentage of any non-winning Liberal candidate in the province outside of the [Montreal](/source/Montreal) area. {{citation needed|date=September 2014}}
Charest was found dead on March 1, 2014, along a road in her native Matane, Quebec.
