Malaysian footballer (1946–2020)

The name *Abdullah* is a [patronymic](/source/Patronymic), and the person should be referred to by their [given name](/source/Given_name), *Namat*. The word "bin"/"ibn" or "binti"/"binte" means 'son of' or 'daughter of', respectively.

**Dato' Namat Abdullah** [DSPN](/source/List_of_post-nominal_letters_(Penang)) [AMN](/source/Order_of_the_Defender_of_the_Realm) (30 March 1946 – 17 December 2020) was a [Malaysian](/source/Malaysian_people) footballer.[2] He was a part of the Malaysian squad at the [1972 Summer Olympics](/source/Football_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics).[3][4] On 17 September 2014, [FourFourTwo](/source/FourFourTwo) he was listed among the top 25 Malaysian footballers of all time.[5]

## Career overview

He was born in [Butterworth, Penang](/source/Butterworth%2C_Penang).[6] Namat played as a [striker](/source/Forward_(association_football)#Striker) when he helped Penang won the [Burnley Cup](/source/Burnley_Cup) in 1965 before playing as a [right-back](/source/Right-back).[7] Namat featured for the Malaysian national team in the [1972 Munich Olympics](/source/1972_Munich_Olympics) [football competition](/source/Football_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics), playing all three group games.[8][9][10][11] He also played for Malaysia in the [1974 World Cup qualifying](/source/1974_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification) matches.[12][13] For a period, Namat was captain of Penang FA. He led Penang to a 2–1 victory in 1974 Malaysia Cup final against [Perak](/source/Perak_FA).[14]

On 11 May 1975, Namat was also part of the [Malaysia Selection](/source/Malaysia_League_XI) that played against [Arsenal FC](/source/Arsenal_F.C.) in a friendly match which his team won by 2–0 at [Merdeka Stadium](/source/Merdeka_Stadium).[15][16][17]

During his international career, Namat went on to play a total of 115 matches for Malaysia (including non-FIFA 'A' international matches).[18] Against other nations' national 'A' teams, he had total of 95 caps.[19]

## After retirement

For his contribution to [Malay](/source/Malaysian_Malays) football community in [Penang](/source/Penang) state as a community coaches, he was awarded Maal Hijrah Sports Figure by Penang Malay Association in 2003.[20]

## Personal life

[Shahruddin Abdullah](/source/Shahruddin_Abdullah), his brother also played for [Penang](/source/Penang_FA) and together with his uncle, [Aziz Ahmad](/source/Aziz_Ahmad_(football)).[21]

## Death

He died at his son-in-law's residence in [Taiping](/source/Taiping%2C_Perak), [Perak](/source/Perak), [Malaysia](/source/Malaysia) at 74 after a long battle with [intestinal cancer](/source/Intestinal_cancer) at 5.30 pm on 17 December 2020.[22] His body was brought to his residence in Taman Peruda, [Sungai Petani](/source/Sungai_Petani) the same day and his funeral was held at 9 pm the following day on 18 December 2020.[23][24]
