The **Nairobi Club Ground** is a multi-use sports venue in [Upper Hill](/source/Upper_Hill%2C_Nairobi), [Nairobi](/source/Nairobi), [Kenya](/source/Kenya). It is the second oldest [cricket](/source/Cricket) ground in Kenya, having been predated by the Sir Ali Muslim Club Nairobi[1] (named after the wealthy Arab benefactor, Sir Ali Bin Salim) which opened in 1934.[2][1] The Nairobi Club lays claim to being the first cricket ground to feature a turf [wicket](/source/Wicket#The_pitch) when it opened in the early 1950s, which was installed by former club cricketer for Prestwich in the United Kingdom, and Nairobi Parks Department employee, [Don Pringle](/source/Don_Pringle) who later represented [East Africa](/source/East_Africa_cricket_team) in the [1975 Cricket World Cup](/source/1975_Cricket_World_Cup).[3]

## Cricket

The ground hosted its only [One-Day International](/source/One-Day_International) (ODI) in 1996, when [South Africa](/source/South_Africa_national_cricket_team) played [Sri Lanka](/source/Sri_Lanka_national_cricket_team)[3] in the [Sameer Cup](/source/Sameer_Cup_1996-97). Sri Lanka won the match by 2 wickets, with [Sanath Jayasuriya](/source/Sanath_Jayasuriya) passing 2,500 [runs](/source/Run_(cricket)) in ODI cricket and 100 [wickets](/source/Wicket#Dismissing_a_batsman) in [List A cricket](/source/List_A_cricket) during the match.[4] Other international matches have been played at the venue, with [Kenya](/source/Kenya_national_cricket_team) playing [Tanzania](/source/Tanzania_national_cricket_team) in 1951 and 1952, and [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand_national_cricket_team) in 1999.[5] It also hosted eight matches in the [1994 ICC Trophy](/source/1994_ICC_Trophy), none of which involved Kenya,[6] the highlight perhaps being the match between [Bermuda](/source/Bermuda_national_cricket_team) and the [UAE](/source/United_Arab_Emirates_national_cricket_team) which saw Bermuda score 329/9 only for the UAE to chase the target down and score 330/9 to win by one wicket with just two balls to spare.[7] Both [innings](/source/Innings#Cricket) are in the all-time top 20 ICC Trophy team totals, and the UAE's total is their highest in the ICC Trophy.[8] The cricket team of the [Kenya Kongonis](/source/Kenya_Kongonis_Cricket_Club) operates from the Nairobi Club

## Other sports

Many other sports are played at the ground, with the [Kenya Davis Cup team](/source/Kenya_Davis_Cup_team) playing their home matches here. There is also an all-weather [hockey](/source/Field_hockey) pitch and facilities for [squash](/source/Squash_(sport)), [bowls](/source/Bowls), and [swimming](/source/Swimming_(sport)).[3]
