**naim** is a [messaging](/source/Instant_messaging) and [chat](/source/Online_chat) program written by Daniel Reed in [C](/source/C_(programming_language)); it supports the [protocols](/source/Protocol_(computing)) [AIM](/source/AOL_Instant_Messenger), [ICQ](/source/ICQ), [IRC](/source/Internet_Relay_Chat), and [RPI](/source/Rensselaer_Polytechnic_Institute)'s [Lily CMC](https://web.archive.org/web/20100202211929/http://www.freegroups.org/lily-twiki/bin/view/Lily/WebHome) protocols. Unlike most messaging clients, it is not graphical; it runs from the [console](/source/Command-line_interface) using the [ncurses](/source/Ncurses) library. naim is [free software](/source/Free_software), licensed under the [GNU GPL](/source/GNU_GPL).

naim is a multiplatform program. It is primarily aimed at Unix-like systems.

naim uses the AOL instant messenger [TOC protocol](/source/TOC_protocol) instead of the [OSCAR protocol](/source/OSCAR_protocol). This means naim lacks some features other instant messaging services have.
