**Nahta Cone** is a small [cinder cone](/source/Cinder_cone) in [Cassiar Land District](/source/Cassiar_Land_District) of northwestern [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada. It has an [elevation](/source/Elevation) of 1,670 metres (5,480 feet) and lies near the northern edge of the [Arctic Lake Plateau](/source/Arctic_Lake_Plateau), a glacially scored [plateau](/source/Plateau) of the [Tahltan Highland](/source/Tahltan_Highland) which in turn extends along the western side of the [Stikine Plateau](/source/Stikine_Plateau). The cone is about 70 kilometres (43 miles) south-southeast of the community of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek) and lies in the southwestern corner of [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park), one of the largest [provincial parks in British Columbia](/source/Provincial_parks_in_British_Columbia).

Nahta Cone is a part of the [Mount Edziza volcanic complex](/source/Mount_Edziza_volcanic_complex) and overlies a [limestone](/source/Limestone) hill. The summit of the cone contains a circular [crater](/source/Volcanic_crater) breached on the east which was the source of a roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) long lava flow that travelled northerly and then westerly into the [head](/source/River_source) of Nahta Creek. [Ejecta](/source/Ejecta) from the volcano extends about 500 m (1,600 ft) to the west and 700 m (2,300 ft) to the north. Access to this isolated [volcanic cone](/source/Volcanic_cone) is limited to float plane or helicopter.

## Geography

Nahta Cone is located in [Cassiar Land District](/source/Cassiar_Land_District) of northwestern [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada, near the northern edge of the [Arctic Lake Plateau](/source/Arctic_Lake_Plateau).[2][7][8] It has an [elevation](/source/Elevation) of 1,670 m (5,480 ft) and rises about 60 m (200 ft) above the glacially scored surface of the plateau to a circular [crater](/source/Volcanic_crater) breached on the east.[1][7] The cone is surrounded by [Mess Creek](/source/Mess_Creek) valley to the west, [Wetalth Ridge](/source/Wetalth_Ridge) and Little Arctic Lake to the east, [Tadekho Hill](/source/Tadekho_Hill) to the northeast, [Exile Hill](/source/Exile_Hill) to the north and Arctic Lake to the south.[3] Between Nahta Cone and Tadekho Hill is Nahta Creek which flows west through a valley into Mess Creek, a northwest-flowing [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River).[6][9]

Nahta Cone lies in the southwestern corner of [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park) about 70 km (43 mi) south-southeast of the community of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek).[3] With an area of 266,180 hectares (657,700 acres), Mount Edziza Provincial Park is one of the largest [provincial parks in British Columbia](/source/Provincial_parks_in_British_Columbia) and was established in 1972 to preserve the volcanic landscape.[10][11] It also includes the [Spectrum Range](/source/Spectrum_Range) to the northeast and [Mount Edziza](/source/Mount_Edziza) further to the north which are separated by the broad east–west valley of [Raspberry Pass](/source/Raspberry_Pass).[11][12] Mount Edziza Provincial Park is in the [Tahltan Highland](/source/Tahltan_Highland), a southeast-trending [upland](/source/Upland_and_lowland) area extending along the western side of the [Stikine Plateau](/source/Stikine_Plateau).[3][13]

## Geology

Nahta Cone is the southernmost [cinder cone](/source/Cinder_cone) of the [Big Raven Formation](/source/Big_Raven_Formation), the youngest and least voluminous [geological formation](/source/Geological_formation) of the [Mount Edziza volcanic complex](/source/Mount_Edziza_volcanic_complex).[14][15] It formed on top of a [limestone](/source/Limestone) hill that overlies a [contact](/source/Contact_(geology)) between [Early Devonian](/source/Early_Devonian) [granitic rocks](/source/Granitic_rock) and [Early Carboniferous](/source/Early_Carboniferous) [volcanic rocks](/source/Volcanic_rock) of the Stikine Assemblage, the oldest exposed [stratified](/source/Stratigraphy) rocks of the [Stikinia terrane](/source/Stikinia_terrane) which [accreted](/source/Accretion_(geology)) to the [continental margin](/source/Continental_margin) of North America during the [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic).[16][17][18] Five tiny [hawaiite](/source/Hawaiite) [conelets](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/conelet) consisting of black and brick-red [scoria](/source/Scoria) [blocks](/source/Volcanic_block) comprise Nahta Cone; the hawaiite contains [phenocrysts](/source/Phenocryst) of [olivine](/source/Olivine) and [plagioclase](/source/Plagioclase).[6][7][19] Nahta Cone is somewhat older than [The Ash Pit](/source/The_Ash_Pit) in the [Mess Lake Lava Field](/source/Mess_Lake_Lava_Field) which may be the youngest cinder cone of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex.[20]

Nahta Cone was the source of [air-fall](/source/Pyroclastic_fall) [tephra](/source/Tephra) and a roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) long lava flow which extends northerly and then westerly into the [head](/source/River_source) of Nahta Creek.[6][7] The air-fall tephra is [lapilli](/source/Lapilli)-sized and distributed about 500 m (1,600 ft) west and 700 m (2,300 ft) north of the cone, suggesting that the volcano was volcanically active at least twice during different wind conditions.[7][19] Erosion has unmodified the blocky surface of the lava flow, but Nahta Creek at its distal end has begun to etch a new channel where it displaced the stream.[7] Canadian [volcanologist](/source/Volcanologist) [Jack Souther](/source/Jack_Souther) obtained a [radiocarbon date](/source/Radiocarbon_date) of 1,340 years from the lava flow in 1970.[19]

## Name and etymology

Nahta Cone and lava flow from the southeast with the [Spectrum Range](/source/Spectrum_Range) obscured by clouds in the background

The name of the cone became official on January 2, 1980, and was adopted on the [National Topographic System](/source/National_Topographic_System) map 104G/7 after being submitted to the [BC Geographical Names](/source/BC_Geographical_Names) office by the [Geological Survey of Canada](/source/Geological_Survey_of_Canada).[2][21] It means 'seven' in the [Tahltan language](/source/Tahltan_language), referring to the last seven survivors of the Wetalth people who were outcast or exiled from the [Tahltans](/source/Tahltan) in times past.[2] Several other features on the Arctic Lake Plateau such as Wetalth Ridge, [Outcast Hill](/source/Outcast_Hill), Exile Hill and Tadekho Hill also have names with Tahltan roots that were adopted on January 2, 1980.[22][23][24][25][26] In his 1992 report *The Late Cenozoic Mount Edziza Volcanic Complex, British Columbia*, Jack Souther gave Nahta Cone the [numeronym](/source/Numeronym) *AL-1*.[14]

## Accessibility

Nahta Cone can be accessed via charter aircraft from [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake) and Tatogga Lake, the latter of which is near the community of [Iskut](/source/Iskut).[11][27][28][29] Private aircraft are prohibited from landing on the neighbouring Kitsu Plateau lava flows.[11] Arctic Lake about 7 km (4.3 mi) south of Natha Cone and Little Arctic Lake about 3 km (1.9 mi) east of Nahta Cone are large enough to be used by float-equipped aircraft.[3][27] Landing on Little Arctic Lake with a private aircraft requires a letter of authorization from the [BC Parks](/source/BC_Parks) Stikine Senior Park Ranger.[11] As of 2023, Alpine Lakes Air and BC Yukon Air are the only air charter companies permitted to provide access to this area via aircraft.[11]
