**Nadine E. Velázquez** (born November 20, 1978) is an American actress and model known for her roles as [Catalina Aruca](/source/Catalina_Aruca) on *[My Name Is Earl](/source/My_Name_Is_Earl)* and Sofia Ruxin on *[The League](/source/The_League)*. She has also appeared in films such as *[Blast](/source/Blast_(2004_film))* (2004), *[A Day in the Life](/source/A_Day_in_the_Life_(film))* (2009), *[Flight](/source/Flight_(2012_film))* (2012), *[Snitch](/source/Snitch_(film))* (2013), and *[Ride Along 2](/source/Ride_Along_2)* (2016), and was a cast member on the TV series *[Major Crimes](/source/Major_Crimes_(TV_series))*.

## Early life

Velázquez was born in [Chicago](/source/Chicago), [Illinois](/source/Illinois). She is of [Puerto Rican descent](/source/Puerto_Rican_American). After graduating from [Notre Dame High School for Girls](/source/Notre_Dame_High_School_for_Girls),[1] she earned a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in [marketing](/source/Marketing) from [Columbia College Chicago](/source/Columbia_College_Chicago) in 2001.[2] She has a brother named Nelson.

## Career

Velázquez has appeared in print ads, television, and film. Her first acting role was a [McDonald's](/source/McDonald's) commercial as a drive-through lady.[3] She was originally cast as [Fernando Sucre](/source/Fernando_Sucre)'s girlfriend, [Maricruz Delgado](/source/Maricruz_Delgado), in the [Fox television](/source/Fox_Broadcasting_Company) series *[Prison Break](/source/Prison_Break)* but took the role of [Catalina Aruca](/source/Catalina_Aruca#Catalina_Aruca) in the [NBC](/source/NBC) series *[My Name Is Earl](/source/My_Name_Is_Earl)* instead. Her first film roles were in the movie *[War](/source/War_(2007_film))* with [Jet Li](/source/Jet_Li) and [Jason Statham](/source/Jason_Statham), and in the [Oxygen Network](/source/Oxygen_(TV_network)) original [television film](/source/Television_film) *[Husband for Hire](/source/Husband_for_Hire)*. Her character was killed off after a few minutes of screen time and was replaced by [Minka Kelly](/source/Minka_Kelly). She appeared in a recurring role in [FX](/source/FX_(TV_channel))'s fantasy football sitcom *[The League](/source/The_League)* and on [The CW](/source/The_CW_Television_Network)'s comedy-drama *[Hart of Dixie](/source/Hart_of_Dixie)*.

On March 8, 2021, it was announced that Velazquez was to join the cast of [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company)'s music series *[Queens](/source/Queens_(American_TV_series))*, alongside [Brandy](/source/Brandy_Norwood), [Eve](/source/Eve_(rapper)) and [Naturi Naughton](/source/Naturi_Naughton).[9][10][11][12] In May 2021, it was announced the show was being picked up for a full series.[13][14][15][16] On October 1, 2021, the first promo single from *Queens* (“Nasty Girl") was released featuring Velasquez alongside the cast: Brandy, Eve, Naughton and Velazquez.[17] A music video, directed by [Tim Story](/source/Tim_Story), was released on the same day.[18] This was followed on October 18, 2021, by another rap song from the *Queens* soundtrack: "The Introduction", which was co-written by [Nas](/source/Nas).[19] *[Queens](/source/Queens_(American_TV_series))* debuted on October 19, 2021, and reviews were largely positive; Caroline Framke of *[Variety](/source/Variety_(magazine))* praised the quartet's musical offering, calling their raps “sharp and distinct […] making clear their talent as both individuals and a swaggering collective”.[20] Angie Han of *[The Hollywood Reporter](/source/The_Hollywood_Reporter)* called the show “Impressive […] lavish […] magic”.[21]
