**NGC 5597** is an [intermediate spiral galaxy](/source/Intermediate_spiral_galaxy) in the [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Libra](/source/Libra_(constellation)). Its velocity with respect to the [cosmic microwave background](/source/Cosmic_microwave_background) is 2,956±18 km/s, which corresponds to a [Hubble distance](/source/Hubble's_law) of 142.2 ± 10.0 [Mly](/source/Light-year#Definitions) (43.59 ± 3.06 [Mpc](/source/Parsec#Megaparsecs_and_gigaparsecs)).[1] However, one *non-redshift* measurement gives a much closer distance estimate of 125.90 Mly (38.600 Mpc).[2] It was discovered by German-British astronomer [William Herschel](/source/William_Herschel) on 14 May 1784.[3][4]

NGC 5597 is a [Seyfert](/source/Seyfert_galaxy) I galaxy, i.e. it has a [quasar](/source/Quasar)-like nucleus with very high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high-ionisation emission lines, but unlike quasars, the host galaxy is clearly detectable.[5][6]

## Pair of galaxies

NGC 5595 (upper right) and NGC 5597 (lower left) imaged by [Pan-STARRS](/source/Pan-STARRS)

NGC 5597 and [NGC 5595](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=NGC_5595&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_5595)] are listed together as **Holm 638** in [Erik Holmberg's](/source/Erik_Holmberg_(astronomer)) *A Study of Double and Multiple Galaxies Together with Inquiries into some General Metagalactic Problems*, published in 1937.[7] The two galaxies are also listed together as **VV 446** in part II of the [Atlas and Catalogue of Interacting Galaxies](/source/Vorontsov-Vel'yaminov_Interacting_Galaxies).[8]

## Supernovae

Two [supernovae](/source/Supernova) have been observed in NGC 5597:

- **SN 1981E** ([Type II](/source/Type_II_supernova), mag. 17) was discovered by Marina Wischnjewsky on 29 May 1981.[9][10]

- **SN 2012es** ([Type IIb](/source/Type_II_supernova#Type_IIb_supernovae), mag. 16.3) was discovered by [Berto Monard](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Berto_Monard&action=edit&redlink=1) [[it](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berto_Monard)] on 12 August 2012.[11][12]
