**NGC 5559** is a [barred spiral galaxy](/source/Barred_spiral_galaxy), located 240 million light-years away in the constellation of [Boötes](/source/Bo%C3%B6tes).[1] It was discovered on April 10, 1785, by the astronomer [William Herschel](/source/William_Herschel).[7]

In 2001, a [type Ib supernova](/source/Type_Ib_supernova) was detected within NGC 5559, and was subsequently designated **SN 2001co**.[8][9] However, in 2003, the supernova was identified as a [calcium-rich supernova](/source/Calcium-rich_supernova), as it had strong [spectral lines](/source/Spectral_line) characteristic of [calcium](/source/Calcium).[10] The progenitors of these calcium-rich supernovae are still a mystery.[1]
