**NGC 5172** is an [intermediate spiral galaxy](/source/Intermediate_spiral_galaxy) in the [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Coma Berenices](/source/Coma_Berenices). Its velocity with respect to the [cosmic microwave background](/source/Cosmic_microwave_background) is 4,308±19 km/s, which corresponds to a [Hubble distance](/source/Hubble's_law) of 207.2 ± 14.5 [Mly](/source/Light-year#Definitions) (63.53 ± 4.46 [Mpc](/source/Parsec#Megaparsecs_and_gigaparsecs)).[1] However, 13 *non-redshift* measurements give a closer mean distance of 164.63 ± 11.65 Mly (50.477 ± 3.572 Mpc).[2] It was discovered by British astronomer [John Herschel](/source/John_Herschel) on 7 May 1826.[3]

NGC 5172 has a possible [active galactic nucleus](/source/Active_galactic_nucleus), i.e. it has a compact region at the center of a galaxy that emits a significant amount of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum, with characteristics indicating that this luminosity is not produced by the stars.[4][5]

According to Abraham Mahtessian, NGC 5172 and [NGC 5190](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=NGC_5190&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_5190)] form a pair of galaxies.[6]

## Supernovae

Two [supernovae](/source/Supernova) have been observed in NGC 5172:

- **SN 1998cc** ([Type Ib](/source/Type_Ib_and_Ic_supernovae), mag. 18.1) was discovered by the [Lick Observatory](/source/Lick_Observatory) Supernova Search (LOSS) on 15 May 1998.[7][8]

- **SN 2001R** ([Type II](/source/Type_II_supernova), mag. 18.5) was discovered by LOTOSS (Lick Observatory and [Tenagra Observatory](/source/Tenagra_Observatories) Supernova Searches) on 6 January 2001.[9][10]
