**NGC 4189** is an [intermediate spiral galaxy](/source/Intermediate_spiral_galaxy) in the [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Coma Berenices](/source/Coma_Berenices). Its velocity with respect to the [cosmic microwave background](/source/Cosmic_microwave_background) is 2,432±24 km/s, which corresponds to a [Hubble distance](/source/Hubble's_law) of 117.0 ± 8.3 [Mly](/source/Light-year#Definitions) (35.88 ± 2.54 [Mpc](/source/Parsec#Megaparsecs_and_gigaparsecs)).[1] However, 20 *non-redshift* measurements give a closer mean distance of 97.63 ± 4.63 Mly (29.935 ± 1.419 Mpc).[2] It was discovered by German-British astronomer [William Herschel](/source/William_Herschel) on 8 April 1784.[3][4] It was also observed by German astronomer [Arnold Schwassmann](/source/Friedrich_Karl_Arnold_Schwassmann) on 16 November 1900, and added to the [Index Catalogue](/source/New_General_Catalogue#Index_Catalogue) as **IC 3050**.[4]

NGC 4189 has a possible [active galactic nucleus](/source/Active_galactic_nucleus), i.e. it has a compact region at the center of a galaxy that emits a significant amount of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum, with characteristics indicating that this luminosity is not produced by the stars.[5][6]

## M88 group

According to A.M. Garcia, NGC 4189 is a member of the M88 group (also known as [LGG](/source/Lyons_Groups_of_Galaxies) 285). This [group of galaxies](/source/Galaxy_group) contains at least 44 members, of which 17 appear in the [New General Catalogue](/source/New_General_Catalogue) and 18 in the Index Catalogue.[7][8]

## Supernova

One [supernova](/source/Supernova) has been observed in NGC 4189:

- **SN 1966E** (type unknown, mag. 15.5) was discovered by Swiss astronomer [Paul Wild](/source/Paul_Wild_(Swiss_astronomer)) on 12 July 1966.[9][10]
