His debut album, *A Man Born Black*, was released on September 6, 2019. ## Personal life Mykal Kilgore was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. He attended [Florida State University](/source/Florida_State_University).[1] Kilgore is [queer](/source/Queer).[2] ## Career Kilgore's theater credits include *[Motown: The Musical](/source/Motown:_The_Musical)*, *[The Wiz Live!](/source/The_Wiz_Live!)*, and *[Hair](/source/Hair_(musical))*.[3] He made his Broadway Principal debut in Chicago as Mary Sunshine in February of 2026 [4] Kilgore released his debut album *A Man Born Black* in 2019. The album debuted at #2 on the iTunes R&B charts and on five different Billboard charts.[5][6] In 2020, Kilgore received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist,[7] as well as a SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards nomination for New Artist of the Year.[8] The lead single from *A Man Born Black*, "Let Me Go", was nominated for [Best Traditional R&B Performance](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Traditional_R%26B_Performance) for the [63rd Annual Grammy Awards](/source/63rd_Annual_Grammy_Awards) in 2021.[9] Kilgore was the first openly gay artist to be nominated in the category.[10] In October 2024, he appeared on [Eisa Davis](/source/Eisa_Davis) and [Lin-Manuel Miranda](/source/Lin-Manuel_Miranda)'s musical concept album [*Warriors*](/source/Warriors_(Lin-Manuel_Miranda_and_Eisa_Davis_album)).
