Genus of lichens

Myeloconis Scientific classification Kingdom: Fungi Division: Ascomycota Class: Lecanoromycetes Order: Gyalectales Family: Porinaceae Genus: Myeloconis P.M.McCarthy & Elix (1996) Type species Myeloconis fecunda P.M.McCarthy & Elix (1996) Species M. erumpens M. fecunda M. guyanensis M. parva

***Myeloconis*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [corticolous](/source/Corticolous_lichen) (bark-dwelling), [crustose lichens](/source/Crustose_lichen) in the family [Porinaceae](/source/Porinaceae). It has four species.[1] The genus was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) in 1996 by Patrick M. McCarthy and [John Elix](/source/John_Alan_Elix), with *[M. fecunda](/source/Myeloconis_fecunda)* assigned as the [type species](/source/Type_species). The genus name, derived from the [Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) *myelos* ("marrow", or "pith") and *konis* ("dust"), refers to the powdery yellow-orange [pigments](/source/Biological_pigment) in the [medulla](/source/Medulla_(lichenology)).[2]

## Description

Genus *Myeloconis* is characterised by several unique features. These include a medulla that contains yellow or orange [pigments](/source/Biological_pigment) that have not been seen in other lichen species before. The fruiting bodies of *Myeloconis*, known as [perithecioid ascomata](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#perithecium), have a dark, dense, and almost [pseudostromata](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#pseudostromata)l wall. The [hamathecium](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#hamathecium), which is the part of the ascoma that supports the spores, is free and anastomoses at the base. The [asci](/source/Ascus) are uniformly thin-walled, and the [ascospores](/source/Ascospore) are elongate and [muriform](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#muriform).[2]

Although the exact relationship of *Myeloconis* to other lichen genera is not certain, the characteristics of the fruiting bodies and their contents suggest that *Myeloconis* may be closely related to the genera *[Porina](/source/Porina)* and *[Clathroporina](/source/Clathroporina)* in the family Porinaceae.[2]

## Chemistry

The new [phenalenone](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Phenalenone&action=edit&redlink=1) compound, myeloconone A2 (6,7,9-trihydroxy-3,8-dimethoxy-4-methyl-1H-phenalen-1-one), was isolated from *Myeloconis erumpens*. It is a deep yellow pigment.[3] [Leucomyeloconone](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Leucomyeloconone&action=edit&redlink=1) and [myelocoterpene](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Myelocoterpene&action=edit&redlink=1) are other [lichen products](/source/Lichen_product) found in the genus.[2]

## Species

*Myeloconis* species occur in lowland tropical forest.[2]
