It was written by Giles Kavanagh (lyrics) and H. O'Reilly Clint (music) in 1933. It was published by Clint's own music publishing company in [Detroit](/source/Detroit). It was formally adopted as an official [state song](/source/List_of_U.S._state_songs) by the [Michigan Legislature](/source/Michigan_Legislature) in 1937 by Concurrent Resolution 17.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://mi.gov/documents/hal_mhc_mhm_songhistory_53142_7.pdf|title=History of the Adoption of "My Michigan" as an Official Song of the State of Michigan |publisher=State of Michigan|access-date=January 5, 2012}}</ref>
