They are often considered a precursor to [acid jazz](/source/acid_jazz), [ambient](/source/ambient_music) and [trip hop](/source/trip_hop) having performed similar-sounding music before those genres emerged.<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-dub-mw0000071172 | title=In Dub - Mute Beat &#124; Songs, Reviews, Credits &#124; AllMusic | website=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) }}</ref> The band was formed by Kazufumi Kodama, who grew up enjoying [marching band](/source/marching_band) music and later discovered reggae in the late 70s. In 1981 he formed Mute Beat with the aim to make dub music that would go boldly into unexplored music territories, including the use of marching band techniques. The original keyboardist [Gota Yashiki](/source/Gota_Yashiki) left the band in the mid 80s and moved overseas to produce music for [Soul II Soul](/source/Soul_II_Soul) and [Sinéad O'Connor](/source/Sin%C3%A9ad_O'Connor) amongst others.
