A '''musalla''' ({{langx|ar|مصلى|muṣallā}}) is a space that is not a [mosque](/source/mosque), mainly used for prayer in [Islam](/source/Islam).<ref name="Hillenbrand1993">{{cite book |last1=Hillenbrand |first1=R. |editor1-last=Bosworth |editor1-first=C.E. |editor2-last=Van Donzel |editor2-first=E. |editor3-last=Heinrichs |editor3-first=W.P. |editor4-last=Pellat |editor4-first=C.H. |title=Encyclopedia of Islam |volume=VII |date=1993 |pages=658–659 |url=https://archive.org/details/encyclopedia-of-islam-volume-7/page/658/mode/2up}}</ref> The word is derived from the [verb](/source/verb) {{lang|ar|صلى}} (''ṣallā''), meaning "to pray". One use is for the twice-yearly [Eid prayers](/source/Eid_prayers) (''[ʿĪd al-Fiṭr](/source/Eid_al-Fitr)'' and ''[ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā](/source/Eid_al-Adha))'' and sometimes for [funeral prayers](/source/Salat_al-Janazah) as per the [Sunnah](/source/Sunnah).<ref>{{Citation |title=The Sunnah |date=2014-01-01 |work=The Qur’an and the Sunnah |pages=27–75 |url=https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctvkc66xg.4 |access-date=2024-12-27 |publisher=International Institute of Islamic Thought|doi=10.2307/j.ctvkc66xg.4 |url-access=subscription }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last=Badawi |first=Dahir |date=2021 |title=Provisions Of Friday، Eid And Funerals Prayers For Expatriates |journal=Researcher Journal for Islamic Sciences |issue=2 |doi=10.37940/rjis.2021.2.1.2 |issn=2708-4000|doi-access=free }}</ref>

“Musalla” may also refer to a room, structure, or place for performing ''[salah](/source/salah)''<ref>{{Cite web |title=Salat – The Muslim Prayer Book |url=https://www.alislam.org/book/salat/ |access-date=2024-12-27 |website=Islam Ahmadiyya |language=en}}</ref> (canonical prayers), and this is also translated as a “prayer hall” when smaller than a mosque. It is often used for conducting the five mandatory daily [prayers](/source/Salah), or other prayers in (or without) a small [congregation](/source/Salah_al_jama'ah), but not for large congregational worship such as the [Friday Prayers](/source/Friday_prayers) or the Eid Prayers (the latter is done in [congregational mosques](/source/Jama_Masjid) if there is no available musalla, in the original sense of an open space). Such musallas are usually present in airports, malls, universities, and other public places in Muslim-majority countries, as well as in some non-Muslim countries for the use of Muslims. A musalla will usually not contain a [minbar](/source/minbar).
