'''Murrieta Spring''' is a historic [spring](/source/spring_(hydrology)) flowing from the south bank of [Cantua Creek](/source/Cantua_Creek_(Fresno_Slough_tributary)), about 100 yards above where [El Camino Viejo](/source/El_Camino_Viejo) crossed the Creek in the [San Joaquin Valley](/source/San_Joaquin_Valley).  The Spring formed a pool in the arroyo where it emerged from the foot of the eastern mountains of the [Diablo Range](/source/Diablo_Range), a mile above where formerly [California State Route 33](/source/California_State_Route_33), now South Derrick Avenue, crosses Cantua Creek. This is where [Harry Love](/source/Harry_Love_(lawman)) and his detachment of [California Rangers](/source/California_Rangers) found the gang of [Joaquin Murrieta](/source/Joaquin_Murrieta) at the spring and attacked them on July 25, 1853.<ref name=Latta>[Frank F. Years later wells drilled by the [Lillis Ranch](/source/Lillis_Ranch) to provide water for livestock stopped the flow of water from the spring.<ref name=Latta/>{{rp|530-531}}
