== Life ==
Greene received his B.A. in psychology from [Brooklyn College](/source/Brooklyn_College) in 1940, his M.A. in history from [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University) in 1946 and his PhD in philosophy from [The New School for Social Research](/source/The_New_School_for_Social_Research) in 1962. He taught philosophy at [Baruch College](/source/Baruch_College) from 1972 until his retirement in 1991. Before joining Baruch, he had taught at [Graduate Faculty of New School](/source/Graduate_Faculty_of_Political_and_Social_Science). At Baruch he taught courses on [philosophy of literature](/source/philosophy_of_literature) (through an innovative reading of [John Stuart Mill](/source/John_Stuart_Mill) and [Aldous Huxley](/source/Aldous_Huxley)), [history of philosophy](/source/history_of_philosophy), [ethics](/source/ethics), [political philosophy](/source/political_philosophy).<ref name=":0" /> 

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) he Greene served the [United States Air Force](/source/United_States_Air_Force) as a [Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress](/source/Boeing_B-17_Flying_Fortress) pilot.<ref name=":0" />
