He was educated in Sydney and [Sackville](/source/Lower_Sackville%2C_Nova_Scotia). He was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1865<ref name="gemmill"/> and practised in Sydney.<ref name="johnson"/> In 1879, he married Laura Isabel Archibald. The following year, Dodd was named [Queen's Counsel](/source/Queen's_Counsel).
