The '''Murn''' is a river in [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria), Germany, and a right [tributary](/source/tributary) of the river [Inn](/source/Inn_(river)).

== Name ==
The name "Murn" comes from the [Bavarian](/source/Bavarian_language) word ''Mur'' (sand) and could be translated as "sand stream". ''Mur'' is a feminine word in German ("die Mur", plural: Murn ).<ref>{{Cite book|title=Deutsches Gewässernamenbuch: Etymologie der Gewässernamen und der zugehörigen Gebiets-, Siedlungs- und Flurnamen|last=Greule|first=Albrecht|publisher=|year=2014|isbn=|location=|pages=364|via=Google Books}}</ref>

== Geography ==
The source of the Murn is the confluence of the two brooks Surerbach and Surbrunner Bach near [Kirchensur](/source/Kirchensur), [Landkreis Rosenheim](/source/Rosenheim_(district)). It starts to flow southward with the name Murnbach (German ''Bach'' means "brook") and is named Murn with increasing width. It changes direction several times until it finally flows northward into the Inn near Obermühl in the municipality of [Griesstätt](/source/Griesst%C3%A4tt).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://geoportal.bayern.de/bayernatlas/|title=BayernAtlas (mapping service of the Bavarian government)|last=|first=|date=|website=|publisher=|access-date=}}</ref>
