**Murat Bay** is a bay at the western end of [Eyre Peninsula](/source/Eyre_Peninsula) in [South Australia](/source/South_Australia). It is an inlet of the [Great Australian Bight](/source/Great_Australian_Bight). The main town on the bay is [Ceduna](/source/Ceduna%2C_South_Australia).

The [Tourville and Murat Bays Important Bird Area](/source/Tourville_and_Murat_Bays_Important_Bird_Area) includes Murat Bay.

Murat Bay was initially named *Baie des Saints* by [Nicolas Baudin](/source/Nicolas_Baudin),[2] and renamed to *Baie Murat* by [François Péron](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_P%C3%A9ron) and [Louis de Freycinet](/source/Louis_de_Freycinet) on the [same expedition](/source/Baudin_expedition_to_Australia), named after [Joachim Murat](/source/Joachim_Murat), a [Marshal of France](/source/Marshal_of_France).[3] As that name was in French, the current name is the English translation.

[Matthew Flinders](/source/Matthew_Flinders) named the bay [Denial Bay](/source/Denial_Bay), which is now the name of a small community on the western side of the bay. Murat Bay is the enclosed bay bounded by [Cape Thevenard](/source/Cape_Thevenard) and Matts Point. Denial Bay is the larger body of water bounded by [Nuyts Archipelago](/source/Nuyts_Archipelago) on the seaward side.[4]
