After having learned to play piano and banjo as a child, he took up the cornet while at [Bowdoin College](/source/Bowdoin_College) in Brunswick, Maine, first playing it professionally in Massachusetts before taking up the trombone around 1940. In 1946, Ware was in New York playing in bands led by [Tony Parenti](/source/Tony_Parenti),<ref name=kernfeld/> [Wild Bill Davison](/source/Bill_Davison),<ref name=kernfeld/> and [Danny Alvin](/source/Danny_Alvin).<ref name=kernfeld/>

From June 1947 he worked regularly at the [Jazz Ltd.](/source/Jazz%2C_Ltd.) club in Chicago as a member of the house band led by club's co-owner, [Bill Reinhardt](/source/Bill_Reinhardt).<ref name=kernfeld/> At around this time, Ware recorded with [Sidney Bechet](/source/Sidney_Bechet), [Muggsy Spanier](/source/Muggsy_Spanier), and [Doc Evans](/source/Doc_Evans).<ref name=kernfeld/>
