**Mu Virginis**, [Latinized](/source/Romanization_of_Greek) from μ Virginis, is a [star](/source/Star) in the [zodiac](/source/Zodiac) [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Virgo](/source/Virgo_(constellation)). It was listed in the *Calendarium* of [Al Achsasi al Mouakket](/source/Al_Achsasi_al_Mouakket) as *rijl al-‘awwā’*, [Arabic](/source/Arabic) رجل العواء, meaning "The foot of the barking (dog)".[10] With an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 3.88,[2] it is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. The position of the star near the [celestial equator](/source/Celestial_equator) means it is visible from most of the [Earth](/source/Earth). Based upon [parallax](/source/Stellar_parallax) measurements, Mu Virginis is located some 59.6 [light-years](/source/Light-year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun).

Mu Virginis is an [F-type main-sequence star](/source/F-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of F2 V,[4] although it does show some evidence of being a more [evolved star](/source/Stellar_evolution).[6] It has an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 6,751[4] K in its [outer atmosphere](/source/Stellar_atmosphere).[4] The estimated age of the star is 1.5 billion years, and it has a relatively high 47.0[8] km/s [projected rotational velocity](/source/Projected_rotational_velocity). A 1990 study of the star gave it a [giant star](/source/Giant_star) classification, and modeled it with 1.7 times the mass of the Sun, 2.1 times the Sun's [radius](/source/Radius), and shining with 9.8 times the [Sun's luminosity](/source/Sun's_luminosity).[11]

Past observations of this star show some indications of short-term [chromospheric](/source/Chromosphere) variability as well as radial velocity variations.[6] It has a candidate [common proper motion](/source/Common_proper_motion) companion at a projected separation of 770 [AU](/source/Astronomical_Unit). This object has a [J band](/source/J_band_(infrared)) magnitude of 10.72.[12]
