==History==
In [Islamic](/source/Islamic) [tradition](/source/Hadith), it is known for the [Battle of Mu'tah](/source/Battle_of_Mu'tah) in 629 [CE](/source/Common_Era), the first military engagement between the [Arab](/source/Arab) [Muslim](/source/Muslim)s under [Muhammad](/source/Muhammad) and the [Byzantine Empire](/source/Byzantine_Empire). [Mausolea](/source/Mausolea) were built nearby for some of those fallen in said battle, namely [Ja'far ibn Abi Talib](/source/Ja'far_ibn_Abi_Talib), ['Abd Allah ibn Rawahah](/source/'Abd_Allah_ibn_Rawahah), and [Zayd ibn Harithah](/source/Zayd_ibn_Harithah).<ref>[Al-Maqdisi](/source/Al-Maqdisi), p. 178 and [Yaqut](/source/Yaqut_al-Hamawi), IV, p. 677; cited in {{harvnb|Le Strange|1890|pp=509–510}}</ref><ref>[Abu'l-Fida](/source/Abu'l-Fida), p. 247; cited in {{harvnb|Le Strange|1890|p=479}}</ref> An [Ayyubid](/source/Ayyubid_dynasty)/[Mamluk](/source/Mamluk_Sultanate) mosque still stands in the town.{{Sfn|Millar|1991|p=120}}

In 1596 it appeared in the [Ottoman](/source/Ottoman_Syria) [tax registers](/source/Defter) named as ''Muta'', situated in the ''[nahiya](/source/nahiya)'' (subdistrict) of Karak, part of the ''[Sanjak](/source/Sanjak)'' of [Ajlun](/source/Ajlun). It had 14 households; all [Muslim](/source/Muslim). The villagers paid a fixed tax-rate of 25% on agricultural products; including wheat, barley, summer crops, olive trees/vineyards/fruit trees, goats and bee-hives; in addition to occasional revenues. The total tax was 6,000 [akçe](/source/ak%C3%A7e).<ref>Hütteroth and Abdulfattah, 1977, p. 171</ref>
