# Mount Wheat

**Mount Wheat** is a prominent [mountain](/source/Mountain) (1,100 metres (3,600 ft)) forming the highest point in [Wall Range](/source/Wall_Range), rising immediately north of [Thunder Glacier](/source/Thunder_Glacier_(Antarctica)) in the center of [Wiencke Island](/source/Wiencke_Island), [Palmer Archipelago](/source/Palmer_Archipelago). Probably first observed by the [Belgian Antarctic Expedition](/source/Belgian_Antarctic_Expedition) which circumnavigated Wiencke Island in 1898. Named by [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) (US-ACAN) after Lieutenant Commander [Luther William Wheat](/source/Luther_William_Wheat), [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy), helicopter commander with Squadron [VXE-6](/source/VXE-6), [Operation Deepfreeze](/source/Operation_Deepfreeze), 1975–78; [Aviation Projects Manager](/source/Aviation_Projects_Manager), Division of [Polar Programs](/source/Polar_Programs), [National Science Foundation](/source/National_Science_Foundation), 1978; member, [U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/U.S._Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names), 1979–88.
