# Mount Unwin

**Mount Unwin** is a 3,268-metre (10,722-foot) mountain summit located on the west side of [Maligne Lake](/source/Maligne_Lake) in [Jasper National Park](/source/Jasper_National_Park), in the Queen Elizabeth Range of the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies) of [Alberta](/source/Alberta), [Canada](/source/Canada).[1] Its nearest higher peak is [Mount Brazeau](/source/Mount_Brazeau), 13.0 km (8.1 mi) to the east-southeast.[2]

## History

The peak was named in 1908 by [Mary Schäffer](/source/Mary_Sch%C3%A4ffer_Warren) for her guide and companion, Sidney Unwin, who had climbed the peak in an effort to locate the elusive Maligne Lake which she was trying to find.[3][2] Mary named many of the mountains around the lake, including [Mount Charlton](/source/Mount_Charlton_(Canada)), [Maligne Mountain](/source/Maligne_Mountain), and [Mount Warren](/source/Mount_Warren_(Alberta)).

The mountain's name was made official in 1947 by the [Geographical Names Board of Canada](/source/Geographical_Names_Board_of_Canada).[4]

## Climate

Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Mount Unwin is located in a [subarctic climate](/source/Subarctic_climate) zone with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.[5] Temperatures can drop below −20 °C (−4 °F) with wind chill factors below −30 °C (−22 °F). [Precipitation](/source/Precipitation) [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from Mount Unwin drains down the [Maligne River](/source/Maligne_River), which is a tributary of the [Athabasca River](/source/Athabasca_River).
