'''Mount Sinyella''' is a {{convert|5,441|ft|meter|adj=mid|-elevation|abbr=off|sp=us}} summit located in the western end of [Grand Canyon National Park](/source/Grand_Canyon_National_Park), in [Coconino County](/source/Coconino_County%2C_Arizona) of northern [Arizona](/source/Arizona), in the [Southwestern United States](/source/Southwestern_United_States).<ref name="gnis"/> It is situated {{convert|1.7|mi|km}} north-northwest of Uqualla Point, and {{convert|4|mi|km|spell=in}} southeast of Boysag Point, at the mouth of Havasu Canyon. As the high point of Sinyella Mesa, it towers 1,200 feet above the mesa, and 3,600 feet above the nearby [Colorado River](/source/Colorado_River) which is 1.5 mile to the northwest.

This isolated [butte](/source/butte) is an erosional remnant composed of [Permian](/source/Permian) [Kaibab Limestone](/source/Kaibab_Limestone) and [Coconino Sandstone](/source/Coconino_Sandstone).<ref name="publications.americanalpineclub.org">[http://publications.americanalpineclub.org/articles/12196223101/North-America-United-States-Arizona-Mount-Sinyala North America, United States, Arizona, Mount Sinyala, Americanalpineclub.org]</ref> This sandstone, which is the third-youngest stratum in the Grand Canyon, was deposited 265 million years ago as sand dunes. According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Mount Sinyella is located in a [Cold semi-arid climate](/source/Cold_semi-arid_climate) zone.<ref name=Peel>{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. ==History==
This butte's name was adopted as Mount Sinyala in 1932 by the [U.S. Board on Geographic Names](/source/U.S._Board_on_Geographic_Names). In 1988, the board officially revised it to the present spelling, Sinyella.<ref name="gnis"/> It was named by the American conservationist [Charles Sheldon](/source/Charles_Alexander_Sheldon) for Judge Sinyella (1853–1923), a prominent [Havasupai](/source/Havasupai) [chief](/source/Tribal_chief) who Sheldon hired as a guide to show him the canyon in 1912.<ref name="gnis"/><ref>United States Board on Geographic Names, ''Decisions on Geographic Names in the United States, Decision List No. 8804'', 1988, page 2.</ref> "It is interesting to go with him [Sinyala], he knows every foot of the country" noted Sheldon.<ref>Karl Jacoby, ''Crimes Against Nature'', 2001, University of California Press, page 267.</ref> The local native inhabitants called it "Week-eel-eela" which is said to mean "stick sitting up", also their general term for any butte.<ref>Gregory McNamee, ''Grand Canyon Place Names'', 1997, Mountaineers Publisher, {{ISBN|9780898865332}}, page 102.</ref>

The [first ascent](/source/first_ascent) of the summit was made April 11, 1960, by Don Myers, Mike Sherrick, Jim Wilkerson, and Bill Amborn via the north face.<ref name="publications.americanalpineclub.org"/> The second ascent was made by Dave Ganci and Jerry Robertson, May 3, 1969.<ref>[http://grandcanyonhistory.org/uploads/3/4/4/2/34422134/tidrick_ganci_and_robertson_oral_history_transcript_june_12_2015.pdf Grandcanyonhistory.org]</ref>
