The mountain was named in 1909 for [Mary Schäffer Warren](/source/Mary_Sch%C3%A4ffer_Warren) (1861–1939), an American-Canadian naturalist, illustrator, photographer, and writer.<ref name=bivouac/> Other reports have it being named in 1894 by Samuel E.S. Allen for [Dr. Charles Schäffer](/source/Charles_Sch%C3%A4ffer) (1838–1903), who was Mary's husband.<ref name=bcgnis>{{cite bcgnis|id=17244|name=Mount Schaffer|access-date=2019-09-21}}</ref>

The [first ascent](/source/first_ascent) of the Mount Schaffer was made in 1909 by M. Goddard and W. Richardson.<ref name=peakfinder>{{cite peakfinder|id=1221|name=Mount Schaffer|access-date=2019-09-21}}</ref>

Mount Schaffer is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods.<ref name=Belyea1960>{{Belyea-Banff-NP}}</ref> Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the [Laramide orogeny](/source/Laramide_orogeny).<ref name=gadd>{{cite book|title=Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Columbias |author=Gadd, Ben |year=2008}}</ref>

==Climate==
Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Mount Schaffer is located in a [subarctic climate](/source/subarctic_climate) zone with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.<ref name=Peel>{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from Mount Schaffer drains into tributaries of the [Kicking Horse River](/source/Kicking_Horse_River) which is a tributary of the [Columbia River](/source/Columbia_River).
