Mount Sarrail is situated 1.0 kilometre north of the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas), within [Peter Lougheed Provincial Park](/source/Peter_Lougheed_Provincial_Park). Its nearest higher peak is [Mount Foch](/source/Mount_Foch), {{convert|1.0|km|mi|abbr=on}} to the southeast.<ref name=bivouac/> Mount Sarrail can be seen from [Upper Kananaskis Lake](/source/Upper_Kananaskis_Lake) and Alberta Highway 40.

The mountain was named in 1918 for General [Maurice Sarrail](/source/Maurice_Sarrail) (1856–1929), the commander of the French Third Army in [World War I](/source/World_War_I).<ref name=bivouac/><ref>{{cite book|title=Place-names of Alberta|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015070267029;view=1up;seq=117|year=1928|publisher=Geographic Board of Canada|location=Ottawa|page=113}}</ref><ref name=peakfinder/>

The mountain's name was officially adopted in 1924 by the [Geographical Names Board of Canada](/source/Geographical_Names_Board_of_Canada).<ref name=cgndb/>

The first ascent of the mountain was made in 1930 by [Kate (Katie) Gardiner](/source/Kate_Gardiner) and Walter Feuz.<ref name=bivouac/> The duo also made the first ascents of nearby Mount Foch and [Mount Lyautey](/source/Mount_Lyautey) that same year.<ref>{{cite peakfinder|id=492|name=Mount Foch|access-date=2021-11-07}}</ref>

==Geology==
Mount Sarrail is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the [Laramide orogeny](/source/Laramide_orogeny).<ref name=gadd>{{citation|title=Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Columbias |author=Gadd, Ben |year=2008}}</ref>

In terms of favorable weather, June through September are the best months to climb Mount Sarrail.
