The mountain is located on the eastern side of [Abbot Pass](/source/Abbot_Pass) which separates [Lake Louise](/source/Lake_Louise_(Alberta)) in [Banff National Park](/source/Banff_National_Park) from [Lake O'Hara](/source/Lake_O'Hara) in [Yoho National Park](/source/Yoho_National_Park). [Mount Victoria](/source/Mount_Victoria_(Bow_Range)) lies immediately on the western side of the pass. The mountain was named by [George M. Dawson](/source/George_Mercer_Dawson) in 1894 for Sir [John Henry Lefroy](/source/John_Henry_Lefroy) (1817–1890), an astronomer who had travelled over {{convert|8800|km|mi|-1}} in Canada's north between 1842 and 1844 making meteorological and magnetic observations.{{cite crdb | id=768 | name = Mount Lefroy |access-date=2019-08-17}} The mountain is the site of the first fatal accident in modern mountaineering in Canada. In 1896 during a failed summit bid, [Philip Stanley Abbot](/source/Philip_Stanley_Abbot) slipped on rocks after just coming off an icy section and plummeted down the rock face to his death.
