In association with names from [Jonathan Swift](/source/Jonathan_Swift)'s ''[Gulliver's Travels](/source/Gulliver's_Travels)'' grouped in this area, it was named by the [UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/UK_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) in 1988 after [Lagado](/source/Lagado), the capital of the flying island of [Laputa](/source/Laputa).<ref name=gnis/>
