**Mount Knauff** ([71°36′S 169°49′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=71_36_S_169_49_E)) is a mountain that rises to over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) between [Egeberg Glacier](/source/Egeberg_Glacier) and the terminus of [Dugdale Glacier](/source/Dugdale_Glacier) on the [Pennell Coast](/source/Pennell_Coast) of [Victoria Land](/source/Victoria_Land), Antarctica. The east side of Mount Knauff and a spur which extends northward to [Robertson Bay](/source/Robertson_Bay) are marked by abrupt scarp slopes that are typical of this coast. It was named by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) after Major General [Robert A. Knauff](/source/Robert_A._Knauff), chief of staff of the [New York Air National Guard](/source/New_York_Air_National_Guard), who supervised five flying wings and the [Eastern Air Defense Sector](/source/Eastern_Air_Defense_Sector) and was primary advisor to the adjutant general on Air Guard matters. Knauff was active in the [United States Antarctic Program](/source/United_States_Antarctic_Program) (USAP) from 2003 and remained a powerful voice in that governing body until retirement in 2009, being involved in many high priority USAP [International Polar Year](/source/International_Polar_Year) projects, including the commissioning of the new [Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station](/source/Amundsen%E2%80%93Scott_South_Pole_Station) in January 2008.[1]
