# Mount Julius Caesar

**Mount Julius Caesar** is a 13,213-foot (4,027-meter) mountain [summit](/source/Summit) located on the crest of the [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada) mountain range in northern [California](/source/California), United States.[4] It is situated in the [John Muir Wilderness](/source/John_Muir_Wilderness) on the boundary that [Sierra National Forest](/source/Sierra_National_Forest) shares with [Inyo National Forest](/source/Inyo_National_Forest), and along the common border shared by [Fresno County](/source/Fresno_County,_California) with [Inyo County](/source/Inyo_County,_California). It is one mile southwest of [line parent](/source/Line_parent) [Bear Creek Spire](/source/Bear_Creek_Spire), and 22 miles (35 km) west of the community of [Bishop](/source/Bishop,_California). Italy Pass is one-half mile immediately south of the summit, and Granite Park lies to the southeast. Mount Julius Caesar ranks as the 106th-highest summit in California.[1] [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the summit rises 2,000 feet (610 meters) above [Lake Italy](/source/Lake_Italy) in 0.7 miles (1.1 km).

## History

The [first ascent](/source/First_ascent) of the summit was made August 12, 1928, by Alfred and Myrtle Prater.[5] This landform was named by the first ascent party to honor [Julius Caesar](/source/Julius_Caesar), with the connection attributable to its position overlooking [Lake Italy](/source/Lake_Italy).[6][7] The north face and east arête was climbed August 9, 1953, by Jim Koontz, Pete Murphy, Al Wolf, and Ed Toby.[3] The first winter ascent was made March 18, 1965, by Tom Ross and Peter Lewis.[5] The present spelling of the toponym was officially adopted in 1978 by the [U.S. Board on Geographic Names](/source/U.S._Board_on_Geographic_Names).[4]

## Climate

According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Mount Julius Caesar is located in an [alpine climate](/source/Alpine_climate) zone.[8] Most [weather fronts](/source/Weather_front) originate in the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean), and travel east toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. As fronts approach, they are forced upward by the peaks ([orographic lift](/source/Orographic_lift)), causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain or [snowfall](/source/Snowfall) onto the range. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the west side of this mountain drains into Lake Italy which is within the [San Joaquin River](/source/San_Joaquin_River) watershed, and from the east side to Pine Creek, thence [Owens Valley](/source/Owens_Valley).
