Mount Indefatigable was named in 1917 for {{HMS|Indefatigable|1909|6}}, a British battlecruiser that sank during the [Battle of Jutland](/source/Battle_of_Jutland) in [World War I](/source/World_War_I).<ref name="crdb"/><ref>{{cite book|title=Place-names of Alberta|year=1928|publisher=Geographic Board of Canada|location=Ottawa|page=67|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015070267029&view=1up&seq=71}}</ref> The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1922 by the [Geographical Names Board of Canada](/source/Geographical_Names_Board_of_Canada).<ref name=cgndb/>

The [first ascent](/source/first_ascent) of the peak was made in 1901 by [Walter D. Wilcox](/source/Walter_D._Wilcox).<ref name="crdb"/><ref name=bivouac/>

In 2005, the popular trail to the summit of Mount Indefatigable was decommissioned to protect prime [grizzly bear](/source/grizzly_bear) habitat. Mount Indefatigable is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the [Laramide orogeny](/source/Laramide_orogeny).<ref name=gadd>{{citation|title=Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Columbias |author=Gadd, Ben |year=2008}}</ref>

Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Mount Indefatigable is located in a [subarctic climate](/source/subarctic_climate) zone with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.<ref name=Peel>{{cite journal | author = Peel, M.
