# Mount Hurd

**Mount Hurd** is a [mountain](/source/Mountain) in the [Ottertail Range](/source/Ottertail_Range) of the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies) in [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada). It was named after Major [Marshall Farnam Hurd](/source/List_of_Union_Pacific_Railroad_civil_engineers_(1863%E2%80%931869)#List) (1823-1903) a [Canadian Pacific Railway](/source/Canadian_Pacific_Railway) engineer and explorer.[4] It was featured on a 1928 [Canada Post](/source/Canada_Post) 10¢ [stamp](/source/Postage_stamp) based on a painting by [Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith](/source/Frederic_Marlett_Bell-Smith).

## Climate

Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Mount Hurd is located in a [subarctic climate](/source/Subarctic_climate) with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.[5] Temperatures can drop below −20 °C with wind chill factors below −30 °C. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from Mount Hurd drains into tributaries of the [Kicking Horse River](/source/Kicking_Horse_River) which is a tributary of the [Columbia River](/source/Columbia_River).
