On September 9, 1942, the Japanese [submarine ''I-25''](/source/I-25_(submarine)) surfaced near [Cape Blanco](/source/Cape_Blanco_(Oregon)), Oregon, and launched a [Yokosuka E14Y](/source/Yokosuka_E14Y) "Glen" seaplane piloted by [Nobuo Fujita](/source/Nobuo_Fujita), who dropped [incendiary bombs](/source/incendiary_bombs) on Mount Emily in an unsuccessful attempt to start a major [forest fire](/source/forest_fire).<ref>{{cite web |title=Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest: Japanese Bombing Site Trail #1118 |url=http://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/rogue-siskiyou/recreation |publisher=[United States Forest Service](/source/United_States_Forest_Service) |access-date=10 September 2021}}</ref> This made Mount Emily the second place in the continental United States to be bombed by an enemy aircraft, with [Dutch Harbor](/source/Battle_of_Dutch_Harbor) occurring three months earlier in [Unalaska, Alaska](/source/Unalaska%2C_Alaska). The site of the bombing was listed in the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) as the ''Wheeler Ridge Japanese Bombing Site'' in July 2006.<ref name="nris"/>
