Mount Bole is located {{convert|18|mi|km}} south of [Bozeman](/source/Bozeman%2C_Montana) in the northern [Gallatin Range](/source/Gallatin_Range), which is a subrange of the [Rocky Mountains](/source/Rocky_Mountains).<ref name=pb/> It is set in the [Gallatin National Forest](/source/Gallatin_National_Forest) and the Hyalite Porcupine Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area.<ref name=pb/> The peak is the highest peak on Hyalite Ridge and it ranks as the fourth-highest peak in the Gallatin Range.<ref name=pb/> Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into tributaries of the [Gallatin River](/source/Gallatin_River). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the summit rises over {{convert|2500.|ft|m|abbr=off|sp=us}} above Storm Castle Creek in {{convert|0.85|mi|km}}. The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names),<ref name="gnis"/> and it honors William M.
