Mount Barr is one of several magmatic features just north of the [Chilliwack batholith](/source/Chilliwack_batholith). It is part of [a large circular igneous intrusion](/source/Mount_Barr_Plutonic_Complex) that was emplaced along the Fraser Fault 16 to 21 million years ago.<ref name="SI"/><ref>[http://www.northwestgeology.com/chapter%205.pdf Chapter 5: The Cascade Episode]</ref> The intrusion is part of the [Pemberton Volcanic Belt](/source/Pemberton_Volcanic_Belt), an eroded [volcanic belt](/source/volcanic_belt) that formed as a result of [subduction](/source/subduction) of the [Farallon Plate](/source/Farallon_Plate) starting 29 million years ago.<ref name="SI">{{Cite web |url=http://www.eps.mcgill.ca/~courses/c186-530/Nazko/info/bevier%20et%20al%201979,%20Anahim.pdf |title=Miocene peralkaline volcanism in west-central British Columbia - Its temporal and plate-tectonics setting |access-date=2010-02-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110706185459/http://www.eps.mcgill.ca/~courses/c186-530/Nazko/info/bevier%20et%20al%201979,%20Anahim.pdf |archive-date=2011-07-06 |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>[https://www.sfu.ca/~dthorkel/linked/madsen%20et%20al.,%20plates%20and%20slab%20wind%20w%20nam%2006.pdf Cenozoic to Recent plate configurations in the Pacific Basin: Ridge subduction and slab window magmatism in western North America]</ref><ref>[http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/volcanoes/cat/volcano_e.php?id=gvb_fgl_006 Catalogue of Canadian volcanoes: Franklin Glacier] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101211094941/http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/volcanoes/cat/volcano_e.php?id=gvb_fgl_006 |date=2010-12-11 }}</ref>
