# Mount Bago

**Mount Bago** is an 11,870-foot (3,620-meter) mountain summit located west of the crest of the [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada) mountain range, in the southeast corner of [Fresno County](/source/Fresno_County,_California), in northern [California](/source/California).[3] It is situated in [Kings Canyon National Park](/source/Kings_Canyon_National_Park), 14 miles (23 km) west of the community of [Independence](/source/Independence,_California), 2.3 miles west of the [Kearsarge Pinnacles](/source/Kearsarge_Pinnacles), and 2.4 miles southwest of [Mount Rixford](/source/Mount_Rixford). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the south aspect rises 3,675 feet (1,120 meters) above Junction Meadow in one mile. The [John Muir Trail](/source/John_Muir_Trail) passes to the northeast of this remote geographical feature. The [first ascent](/source/First_ascent) of the summit was made July 11, 1896, by [Joseph Nisbet LeConte](/source/Joseph_Nisbet_LeConte) and Wilson S. Gould.[4]

## Climate

According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Mount Bago is located in an [alpine climate](/source/Alpine_climate) zone.[5] Most [weather fronts](/source/Weather_front) originate in the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean), and travel east toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. As fronts approach, they are forced upward by the peaks, causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain or [snowfall](/source/Snowfall) onto the range ([orographic lift](/source/Orographic_lift)). Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the peak drains into tributaries of [Bubbs Creek](/source/Bubbs_Creek), which in turn is a tributary of the [South Fork Kings River](/source/South_Fork_Kings_River).
