'''Mount Arrowsmith''' is the highest [mountain](/source/mountain) east of [Port Alberni](/source/Port_Alberni) on Vancouver Island. Its dominant rock is [basalt](/source/basalt). The mountain is contained within the [Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region](/source/Mount_Arrowsmith_Biosphere_Region) and as of September 18, 2009 is designated part of {{convert|1,300|ha|acre|abbr=on|sigfig=2}} hectare Mt. Arrowsmith Massif Regional Park.

==History==
The mountain is named kał-ka-č’ałḥ (Kulth-ka-choolth) meaning Jagged Points Facing Upward in the Tseshaht Nuu-chah-nulth languages.<ref name=bcgnis>{{cite bcgnis|id=9247 |title=Mount Arrowsmith |access-date=2010-02-20}}</ref><ref>Hupacasath.ca Website https://hupacasath.ca/who-we-are/language-culture/hupacasath-place-language-and-story-map/</ref>

The first recorded ascent by colonists was made by botanist [John Macoun](/source/John_Macoun) in 1887 led by local Indigenous guide Qualicum Tom and his son James Thomas. Macoun was a botanist to the [Geological Survey of Canada](/source/Geological_Survey_of_Canada).  [Mount Waddington](/source/Mount_Waddington) was first seen from the peak of Mount Arrowsmith by [Don](/source/Don_Munday) and [Phyllis Munday](/source/Phyllis_Munday) in 1925 (see also [Mount Munday](/source/Mount_Munday)). ==Biogeoclimatic zones==
Mount Arrowsmith has three main [biogeoclimatic zones](/source/Biogeoclimatic_zones_of_British_Columbia). On the windward, wetter west-facing slopes the Coastal Western Hemlock zone occurs up to {{convert|1,050|m|ft|sigfig=3|abbr=on}}, where it grades into the Mountain Hemlock zone. This forms a continuous forest up to {{convert|1,300|m|ft|abbr=on|sigfig=3}}; above is a parkland phase which grades into the Alpine Tundra zone at {{convert|1,600|m|ft|abbr=on|sigfig=3}}. The leeward, east-facing slopes are warmer thanks to more sunshine, and all zone boundaries are higher by {{convert|50|m|ft|sigfig=2|abbr=on}}.<ref>R.N. Green and K. Klinka (1994).
